The Maritiem Museum Rotterdam is the oldest shipping museum in Holland. The original collection is gathered from 1852 and excises out of maritieme objects like paintings, cartographic, drawings and photographic from ship building, prints and models of ships.

The martieme Museum Rotterdam got his origin from the Modelroom of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Yatchclub which have been set up on demeand of Prins Hendrik (1820-1879). Prins Hendrik was the son of the duchess of Russia, Anna Oaulowna and King Willem the 3rd.
Prins Hendrik, also know as ¨the sailor¨, stimulated the use of steampower on ships, what resulted in the set up of the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland in 1875. In the beginning only members of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Yachtclub were able to join the Modelroom, after 1874 it became a public museum.
The name of this shipping museum is changed in 1999 to Maritiem Museum Rotterdam.
Besides the permanent collection of the shipping museum, they also offer other kinds of exhibitions. The creation of the shipping company Nedlloyd NV, the Holland – America line (HAL) and sort sea shipping are some of the subjects that will be in the picture in 2008.
